In recent years, Honduran coffees’ have received numerous international awards. Now discerning coffee drinkers all over the world are discovering the savory coffees of Honduras. Despite growing almost 3% of the world’s coffee (International Coffee Organization), Honduran coffee has been absent from the top ranks of the Specialty Coffee market, however things are definitely changing. Honduras has all the environmental factors on its side: soil, altitude and climate to produce high quality coffees. Specialty buyers are increasing their visits to Honduras.
The Honduran coffee sector provides employment to 30 percent of the population and two million people directly participate in the coffee harvest. In addition to picking the beans, there are other activities such as fertilizer application, shade control, cleaning, drying, commercialization and transport, which provide other employment. More than 100,000 families in the rural areas make their living from coffee production.
Organizations such as SCAH, IHCAFE, HWC have played a major role on developing new markets and improving the qualities and the productivity of Honduras coffee sector.
